Second Winter Request

Got a request to paint another winter painting similar to the last. I did this portion. Once it dries I'll be adding brighter highlights and shadows for the trees.

The Companion

I've started on the companion piece that will go along with my other maple leaf painting. I'm going to let the background dry so the colors stay pure and I can add a bit more detail.

Winter Night

I've been itching to do a black canvas again, so here we go.

There are several things I liked about this painting. The shading in the sky comes accross quite nice. I like how I did the moon. My favorite thing about it however is I did the stars originally with acrylic after applying black gesso to make the canvas black. I let that dry completely then applied a glaze of pthalo and ultramarine blue. Thus turning the stars blue. I then did the moon/shading in the sky and finally I flicked white stars ontop of it all. It's subtle, and you can't tell from the picture. But when you view it it really gives the sky a new dimension with some stars shining brighter than others. I kept the contrast towards the outer edges as thats where its the darkest and you'd see them more. I also liked the closest tree, and I'm a bit happier with the way my evergreens are coming out. The mountains were alright, I like doing them with the filbert brush.

After this I decided to add some finishing touches. You can really see how things mellowed out after drying.

Seaside

After returning from my Oregon trip, I had to paint a seaside painting. Tried my first palm tree. Not super happy with it, but over all a decent job.

Gone Fishing

Decided to do a plain painting today. I think this is the second painting I've done the mountains with a fan brush, and I quite like it that way. It seems I can add more detail. There are a lot of layers in this painting. I also concentrated on doing individual bushes which I think came out well. I used Ultramanium blue which is pretty vibrant. I also used cobalt blue.

The Golden Morning

I've liked some of the golden themed shnazz I've done in the past. I think this is the best one out of the ones I've attempted. Things I liked about this one. I liked the background color, I like how the light plays across the grass by the cabin. I like the background trees. I also like the foreground path. It had some cool texture. Also I liked the sticks in front. I didn't like the closest grass, and I could have done better on the trees, but I think over all this time they had a better shape.

Another

Found this frame on accident. Loved it. It has light and dark layers in the grain, you can't tell from the photos.

The Maple Leaf

Finally got this framed

Eh

Not a big fan of this one. Came out to flat. i covered up all my distant pine trees accidently. But the colors in it were nice.

Light

Just an example of how paintings take on completely different feels in different lighting. Part of the reason I like painting so much is they have a life of their own. I painted what I refer to as a "swatch" board. Has all the different colors I use painted on it. Its amazing to just shift your light source or intensity on it and watch the colors change. Pretty cool stuff.

Un-expected

I expected this one to be bright and cheery. It wasn't. But it turned out pretty cool.
